Perennial or rarely annual herb with erect or ascending stems 30–100 cm long or high from woody rootstock; stem erect or decumbent, puberulous.. Leaves grey-green, ovate in outline, imparipinnate, 2–7 cm long, 1–4 cm wide, leaf segments dentate to pinnatilobed, minutely spinulose-setose to scabrid to almost glabrous.. Capitula terminal and solitary; stalks of individual capitula to 18 cm long; involucre 6–8 mm long; outer phyllaries 8, green, hispid, inner phyllaries with yellow margins; paleae yellow with maroon lines, 4–5 mm long.. Ray florets yellow, neuter, 8, rays 15–17x7–8 mm, striate; disc florets yellow or brown, 3–3.5 mm long.. Achenes black, linear, 7–10 mm long, setulose; pappus of 2(–3) retrorsely barbed aristae 1–2 mm long.
