Perennial herb 0.3–1.2 m high or long; stems several to many from thickened rootstock, much branched, often straggling, reddish or pale purple, ± glabrous.. Leaves ovate in outline, pinnatifid, up to 6 cm long, up to 4.5 cm wide, with 3–7 coriaceous linear segments to 4x0.2 cm, margins scabrid in upper part, apex callose-acute to acuminate; petiole to 2 cm long.. Capitula in lax terminal corymbose cymes; involucre 5–9 mm long; outer phyllaries 6–12, green with pale margins, glabrous or pubescent; inner phyllaries yellow-orange, 6–8.. Ray florets yellow, neuter, 8, rays 3.7–11(–13)x1.2–2.5 mm, tube to 2.3 mm long; disc florets yellow, tubular, 3.4–5.5 mm long.. Achenes black, narrowly obovoid, 3–5 mm long; aristae yellow, 2(–4), 1.5–3 mm long, antrorsely barbed or rarely smooth.
