Annual herb 60–150 cm high, erect, much branched; stem usually solitary, sometimes with reddish marks, striate.. Leaves irregularly bipinnatipartite, 4–16 cm long, 2–9 cm wide, segments linear or lanceolate, 0.5–3 mm wide, apices apiculate, scabridulous; petiole absent or up to 35 mm long.. Capitula in lax terminal cymes; peduncle to 8 cm long; involucre 7–15 mm long; outer phyllaries 8(–13), green, sparsely hairy, inner phyllaries yellow to orange with scarious margins, glabrous or nearly so; paleae 6–10 mm long, brown.. Ray florets yellow or golden yellow, neuter, 6–8, rays 20–30x6–12 mm; disc florets yellow or brown, 3.5–5 mm long.. Achenes ± dimorphic, the outer obovoid, 4–6.5 mm long, with 2–3 mm long aristae; the inner linear, 13–17 mm long, with two 5–6 mm long barbed aristae; all aristae retrorsely barbed.
