Perennial herb, up to 1.5 m high; stems several from the thickened or tuberous rootstock, hardly branched, glabrous.. Leaves ovate in outline, deeply pinnatipartite with 3–7 segments or bipinnatipartite, simple in upper leaves, 4–10(–18) cm long, 2–7 cm wide, leaf segments linear, thick, 1.5–7 mm wide, margins scabrid or pubescent and slightly revolute, apex acute or mucronate; petiole to 5 cm long.. Capitula 1–3 at apex of branches; stalks of individual capitula to 15 cm long; involucre 8–13 mm long; outer phyllaries 8–10, green, pilose at base, inner phyllaries 8–9, yellow with a red stripe, glabrous but for the apex; paleae to 10 mm long.. Ray florets orange or golden yellow, neuter, 8–9, tube ± 3 mm long, pubescent, rays 20–35x10–14 mm; disc florets pale cream yellow, sparsely pubescent near base.. Achenes black, narrowly obovoid, 6–7 mm long, narrowly callose-thickened, pilose; aristae 2, to 2 mm long, nude or sparsely antrorsely barbed.
