Perennial herb or soft-wooded shrub 0.5–3 m high (once described as a tree of 4.5 m); stems usually several from a thick rootstock, often tinged reddish, tomentose to glabrous.. Leaves petiolate, pinnatisect to pinnatipartite, ovate in outline, 6–19 cm long, 6–19 cm wide, leaf segments narrowly ovate or ovate, margins serrate to deeply lobed, pubescent above, pubescent to tomentose beneath; petiole to 50 mm long.. Capitula solitary or up to 5 together; stalks of individual capitula to 3 cm long; involucre cylindric, 7–15 mm long; outer phyllaries leafy, reflexed at anthesis, 7–15 mm long, pubescent to tomentose, inner phyllaries yellow, 7–16 mm long, spreading, pubescent; paleae 6–15 mm long, usually with 3–6 purple lines.. Ray florets yellow, neuter, 6–13, tube 3–3.3 mm long, pubescent, rays 23–30 mm long, to 14 mm wide; disc florets yellow or orange-yellow, 5.5–8 mm long, sparsely puberulous in lower parts.. Achenes shiny dark brown or black, obovoid, 4.5–7 mm long, glabrous; pappus usually absent, rarely with two entire or distally barbed yellow aristae to 2.5 mm long.
