Leaves opposite or ternate, sessile and simple, sometimes deeply lobed or pinnately 3-lobed, 3–22 cm long, 0.6–4 cm wide, base cuneate to cordate, margins crenate, serrate, deeply toothed or lobed, apex acute, with 2 lines of scabrid hairs on margins, otherwise scabrid to glabrous.. Capitula few in lax terminal cymes; stalks of individual capitula to 8 cm long; involucre 5–22 mm long; outer phyllaries 11–30, green, inner phyllaries 13–15, orange, all pubescent outside; paleae yellow, 4–9 mm long.. Ray florets yellow to orange-yellow, pistillate and fertile, 12–15, tube 1.5–2.3 mm long, rays 14–30 mm long; disc florets yellow, 3–5 mm long.. Achenes black or brown, ellipsoid, 3–6.4 mm long; aristae 2, 0.5–4 mm long, antrorsely barbed.
