Perennial or rarely annual herb 30–135 cm high, usually with several erect stems from the tuberous rootstock, stems little branched, sparsely pilose.. Leaves simple and narrowly elliptic to linear, or pinnately 3–7-lobed to bipinnatifid with linear segments, 3–15 cm long, the leaf or segments 1–6(–15) mm wide, sessile, apex acute, glabrous except for the revolute margins which have 2 rows of short scabrid hairs, rarely leaf scabrid; pseudo-petiole to 7.5 cm long.. Capitula terminal and few in lax cymes; stalks of individual capitula to 12 cm long; involucre 6–13 mm long; outer phyllaries green, 8–16, glabrous to pubescent, the inner 8–13 phyllaries with scarious margins, glabrous or nearly so; paleae thick, yellowish, 6–9 mm long.. Ray florets yellow to orange, neuter, 8–16, tube 2–2.5 mm long, rays (10–)20–30x(3–)8–12 mm; disc florets yellow to golden yellow, 6–8 mm long.. Achenes black, ellipsoid, 4.5–11.5 mm long, strigose; aristae 2, 0.5–2 mm long, divergent, nude or with a few retrorse barbs near the apex.. Fig. 171 (page 791).
