Characteristics

Twiner with short shoots and articulated leaves; new shoots, leaves and inflorescences densely grey/white silky hairy. Adult stage leaves smaller than intermediate stages, alternatively arranged on twining branches, almost sessile; lamina narrowly elliptic, 22–28 mm long, 3–5 mm wide, margin recurving. Inflorescences mostly sessile, multi-flowered; bracts leaf-like, 7–9 mm long, persisting. Sepals 6–12 mm long, valvate, green-purple, both surfaces hairy. Petals 12–6 mm long, 3–4 mm wide, free, spathulate but not clawed, outer pale mauve, inner deep purple or pink, fading with age; apices not recurving. Stamens free, differing heights; often one undeveloped filaments eventually unevenly to 5 mm long, lengthening at anthesis; anthers 2–3 mm, recurving (curling) apically and basally, white edged purple; dehiscing through slits, pollen yellow.Pistil ridged, villous; vestigial nectary; style short (1.8 mm); stigma knobby with central projection. Fruits are berries with the seeds embedded in the mesocarp, cylindrical, c. 20 mm long, c. 8 mm diam., very smooth, light brown eventually. Seeds hemispherical, surface minutely pitted.
