Species

Angiosperms > Apiales > Pittosporaceae > Billardiera

Characteristics

Woody rounded shrub, eventually scandent; new shoots glabrescent. Early seedling leaves trilobed, rapidly entire; crenulate, broadly elliptic 30–40 mm long, 20–30 mm wide. Adult leaves alternate; variable; lamina mostly ovate, 34–50 mm long, 8–18 mm wide, narrower in climbing branches, distinctly petiolate (2–3 mm). Inflorescences are cymes with 3–6+ nodding flowers with parts in fives regularly placed around the pistil; rachis 15–30 mm long; peduncles 8–20 mm. Sepals 1–2 mm long, unequal, incurving, purple, glabrous, persisting. Petals obovate, 7–10 mm long, 3–4 mm wide, margin incurving; blue mauve fading with age. Stamens with anthers not narrowing apically, about filament length after anthesis, apically cohering, then caducous as a single unit. Pistil sessile without visible basal nectary, ovary pink-mauve, cylindrical, ridged dense silky hairy; style short, stout; stigma capitate. Fruit berry like with seeds in separate dry cells with papery liners; 20–29 mm long, fusiform eventually oblong or cylindrical, green-purple; mesocarp fleshy. Seeds colliculate.
