Twiner. Cotyledons sessile, almost linear, c. 10 mm long and 1 mm wide. Seedling leaves: lamina trilobed, 10–20 mm long, extending to base; petiole 10–12 mm long. Adult leaves: lamina narrowly elliptic, 24–53 mm long, 4–8 mm wide, discolorous with upper surface glossy green, undersurface paler; petiole 2–5 mm long. Inflorescences solitary, bisexual, tubular flowers; stalks 17–33 mm long, slender, nodding; buds yellow tipped green. Sepals very variable acicular to ovate 3–5 mm long, very hairy outer surface, inner surface often villous. Petals 26–38 mm long, persisting cohering in the throat, green-yellow becoming yellower with age, apices spotted, becoming tinged navy with sex phase change, not recurving. Stamens free with anther:filament ratio 1: 15; filaments tapering to a wider base, anthers rectangular dehiscing mauve-pink pollen through apical slits. Pistil with basal nectary, not stipitate, incompletely bilocular, ovary glabrous, style to 20 mm; stigma barely capitate. Fruits appearing unilocular, berry-like, 18–20 mm long, ± ovoid to obloid, usually royal purple; epicarp thin, flexible, not pithy with seeds in separate dry cells. Seeds free, discoidal, surface ornamentation striate.
