Characteristics

Habit: slender shrub twining up to 5 m high. Leaves: adult leaves mostly alternate, narrow-elliptic, 24–53 mm long, 4–8 mm wide, discolorous, upper surface glossy green, under surface paler; margins slightly recurved; petioles 2–5 mm long.Inflorescences are solitary, pendent, tubular flowers nodding on slender peduncles to 35 mm long. Sepals pink-mauve becoming purple, five approximately equal lobes to 4 mm long including the 1-mm-long acuminate tip, ovate, margins ciliate, outer surfaces mostly glabrous, inner surfaces almost villous. Petals to 25–30 mm long, persisting cohering in the throat for several mm, slightly narrowed at the junction of blade and throat; blade spreading, free, spathulate; apices rounded to slightly acute, mucronate; initially yellow-green, with green tips, all darkening to canary yellow with age and sex phase change, and becoming speckled purple to deep blue on blade margins and from the throat. Stamens free with white, oblong anthers containing mauve pollen; anther filament ratio approximately 1:15. Pistil with basal nectary; ovary cylindrical without a central septum, pubescent; style elongated with minimal stigmatic development. Fruit appearing unilocular, berry like with seeds in separate dry cells; less than 15 mm long, cylindrical-ish, deep glossy blue-purple, outer skin leathery, thin, flexible. Seeds numerous, free. Flowers from October.
