Habit: robust. shrubby twiner, glabrescent. Leaves: adult leaves alternate, mostly narrow-elliptic, 36–60 mm x 6–13 mm, glabrous; petioles 1–2 mm long, lamina extending to the base. Inflorescences: mostly sessile branched corymbs with 10 or less bisexual flowers. Individual flowers stalks less than 10 mm long. Sepals 2–3 mm long, yellow-green, copular basally, apices acute, glabrous. Petals 10 –12 mm long, clawed, briefly cohering in the throat, initially white or very pale yellow, with spreading mauve-red blotches from the throat appearing with sex phase change; apices hairy, spreading. Stamens free, often four and one staminode; filaments tapering, becoming cerise; anthers oblong, white, dehiscing pale mauve pollen. Pistil with vestigial interstaminal nectary, ovary 5–7 mm long, style minimal, stigma capitate. Fruits are bilocular, berry-like with seeds in separate dry cells; oblong, 13–15 mm long; epicarp 2 mm thick; glabrous, green. Seeds numerous, discoidal, slightly bullate. Flowering September to December.
