Billardiera viridiflora L.W.Cayzer & D.L.Jones

Species

Angiosperms > Apiales > Pittosporaceae > Billardiera

Characteristics

Habit: twiner, shoots sparsely white-hairy, older stems red-brown. Leaves alternate, initially obovate, rapidly narrow-elliptic, to 40 mm long, 5–8 mm wide; base attenuate; margins slightly hairy; apices rounded; both surfaces glabrescent, discolorous; petioles to 4 mm. Inflorescences solitary, tubular flowers nodding below the foliage on slender peduncles to 35 mm long, subtended by a leaf-like bract. Sepals basally thickened, narrow-ovate but most unequal in width and length; margins slightly ciliate; apices attenuate and slightly reflexing; outer surface glossy green-mauve; inner surface glabrous. Petals to 40 mm long, barely cohering from base to throat; blade narrow spathulate, rounded at apex, 10–12 mm long, 9 mm wide, free, reflexing salverform, mucronate, green-yellow, becoming and mostly remaining deeper yellow with age and sex phase change although some navy blue blotching from the throat has been observed in sun forms. Stamens free to 40 mm long, about equal; anthers 2–3 mm long, oblong, stained bright blue; filaments, thick, tapering with a central septum on the abaxial surface, remaining white-ish; pollen bright blue. Pistil with prominent disc-like receptacle and basal nectary; ovary cylindrical, to 7 mm long, green, sparsely hairy, almost bilocular through placental intrusion, no central septum but placentation essentially sessile; style approximately five times as long as ovary, straight; minimal stigmatic development. Fruit oblong, 10–12 mm long, appearing unilocular with numerous dry seeds, outer surface leathery, royal purple, inner surface thin papery, white. Seeds kidney shaped, red-brown. Flowering almost continuously from November to January
