Characteristics

Acaulescent perennial herb, with a thickened woody hairy rootstock; rootstock not more than 2 cm. long and 12 mm. in diameter, truncate, shortly divided, with many leaves crowded at the top; taproot simple, ± 3 mm. in diameter.. Leaves almost sessile, 6–17 cm. long and 12–15 mm. wide, 8–16-jugate; rhachis densely hairy to subhirsute; leaflets subsessile, ± rectangular-oblong, 2–12 mm. long, 2–6 mm. wide, rounded to subacute at the apex, widely cuneate to rounded at the base, pubescent on both surfaces and margin or glabrate, prominently nerved beneath with the ascending lateral nerves making an acute angle with the midrib.. Flowers white, yellow or pink to mauve with orange centre, in pedunculate, 3–10-flowered pseu-dumbels; peduncles as long as or longer than the leaves, subhirsute; bracts ovate-lanceolate, 1–2 mm. long, acuminate, 1-nerved, pubescent; pedicels slender, l.5–4(–10) mm. long, articulated above the point of insertion, pubescent.. Sepals oblong-lanceolate, 3–4.5 mm. long, acute to shortly acuminate, 3–5-nerved, sparsely pubescent.. Petals about twice as long as the sepals, glabrous.. Filaments shortly connate at the base; short filaments up to 1.5 mm., the long ones 3–4 mm. long.. Ovary 5-lobed; styles in flowers seen are intermediate in length between the 2 filament whorls, thus flowers are mid-styled.. Capsule ellipsoid, 2.2 mm. long, 1.8 mm. across.. Seeds flattened-ellipsoid, 0.8 mm. long, brown, tuberculate.. Fig. 3/D, p. 18.
