Characteristics

Plants tufted, shortly rhizomatous. Leaves flat, tomentose. Inflorescence a scapose unilateral raceme; flowers pendulous, densely tomentose with plumose red hairs. Perianth actinomorphic, tubular, with spreading equal lobes. Stamens 6, uniseriate, erect, straight, inserted near top of perianth tube; anthers basifixed, the connective dorsally decurrent, inappendiculate. Ovary half-inferior, adnate to perianth on septa, otherwise free nearly to base and forming deep pockets; ovules several per locule, in 2 rows on a short vertically elongated non-dilated placenta; style conical at base, filiform above, usually straight; stigma minutely 3-lobed. Capsule with persistent perianth.
