Characteristics

Erect dwarf-shrub, ± 30 cm tall; young branches reddish brown, glabrous, older grey. Leaves with minute bulbous-based hairs, conspicuously white-dotted; lamina narrowly oblong-elliptic, largest ± 6 x 0.5 cm; margin with over 15 teeth per side; petiole within 2 mm of base with 2-3 teeth to 3 mm long. Spikes 1.5-2.5 cm long, 4-6-flowered; peduncle 5-10 mm long, with 4-7 pairs of gradually larger sterile bracts; fertile bracts whitish-green, greyish when old, sericeous with long (to 1 mm) upwardly directed hairs and with minutely puberulous hairs, elliptic-obovate, lower and middle 21-26 x 6-8 mm of which the slightly recurved narrowly triangular spinose tip 7-9 mm, on each side with 3-5 teeth of which the longest 4-5 mm. Bracteoles 20-22 x 2-3 mm, lanceolate, sometimes with 3-toothed apex, sericeous. Sepals densely glossy-sericeous all over (hairs to 1 mm); dorsal 17-18 mm long, 3-veined from base to apex, elliptic-obovate with ligulate apical part narrowing gradually to a 3-tothed apex; ventral 17-18 mm long, 5-veined from base, ovate, narrowing gradually to an acute apex with two narrowly triangular mucronate teeth ± 3 mm long; lateral ovate, 13-14 mm long, acuminate. Corolla cream with brownish veins, ± 24 mm long of which the tube c. 7 mm; limb obovate, c. 8 mm wide, central lobe longer than wide, broadly emarginate, narrowed at base; filaments ± 5 mm long, shorter than anthers, sparsely glandular (densest downwards) and with hairs near base (two broad also higher up); appendage ± 2 mm long, oblong, rounded; anthers 5.5-6 mm long. Capsule and seed not seen.
