Erect loosely branched shrub or shrubby herb to 1(?-2) m tall; branches glabrous, glaucous. Leaves glabrous, glaucous; lamina ovate to elliptic, largest 5-8.5 x 1-2.8 cm; margin entire or with 1-9 small teeth per side; petiole articulated 1-4 mm above base. Spikes (2-)3-5 cm long, (2-)4-8-flowered; peduncle 8-35 mm long, glabrous, with 2-3 pairs of glabrous and glaucous sterile bracts aggregated near apex, upper pair similar to fertile; fertile bracts 5-7-veined from base, glabrous, glaucous, lower and middle broadly ovate-elliptic, 26-44 x 13-28 mm of which the recurved spinose triangular tip 8-19 mm, entire or with 1-7 teeth on each side of which the longest 0.5-5(-7) mm. Bracteoles 15-23 x 0.5-1(-1.5) mm, linear, widened at base, cuspidate. Sepals glabrous, glaucous, finely ciliate; dorsal 20-28 mm long, 3-5-veined from base, ovate-elliptic with a long ligulate to slightly spathulate apical part which becomes scarious, apex broadly rounded to truncate, irregularly toothed, wavy; ventral 15-21 mm long, 2-5-veined from base, ovate, narrowing gradually to an apex with 2 triangular mucronate teeth 1-3 mm long (rarely also with 1-2 small central teeth); lateral ovate, 9-11 mm long. Corolla blue to mauve with darker veins, 30-40 mm long of which the tube 6-9 mm; limb broadly spathulate, 17-25 mm wide, central lobe wider than long, truncate to retuse, irregularly toothed, slightly constricted at base; filaments 10-12 mm long, sparsely glandular, densely hairy towards base; appendage 1-3 mm long, oblong, straight or curved, rounded; anthers 5-7 mm long. Capsule 12-15 mm long; seed 8-9 x 5-6 mm.
