Characteristics

Prostrate dwarf shrub; branches up to 25 cm long, when young brown or reddish brown and subglabrous to minutely puberulous with bulbous-based hairs. Leaves glabrous or with scattered minute bulbous-based hairs' (rarely with a few minutely puberulous hairs on midrib), white-dotted when old; lamina elliptic to obovate or narrowly so, largest 1.5-4.5 x 0.3-1 cm; margin with (3-)5-12 teeth per side; petiole within 2 mm of stem on each side with 2-4 prickles to 6(-9) mm long. Spikes 2-4.5 cm long, 2-6-flowered; peduncle 3-10 mm long, with 2-4 pairs of gradually larger sterile bracts; fertile bracts coriaceous, glossy, dark green to brownish, sometimes with whitish veins (rarely whole basal part whitish), glabrous to sparsely minutely puberulous with bulbous-based hairs, not ciliate, obovate or broadly so, 23-32 x 5-14 mm of which the straight to slightly recurved triangular or narrowly triangular spinose tip 5-12(-18) mm, on each side with 3-6 spinose teeth of which the longest 2-7 mm. Bracteoles linear to oblanceolate, 17-21 x 1-2 mm, sometimes with a single tooth. Sepals dark green to brownish, glabrous to minutely sparsely puberulous with bulbous-based hairs (rarely ventral puberulous along veins), not ciliate (rarely so); dorsal 17-21 mm long, 3-5-veined from base, ovate-elliptic with long spathulate (more rarely ligulate) apical part, apex rounded to truncate (rarely acute) with central tooth and usually also with 2(-4) smaller teeth (rarely with 2 large apical teeth), apical part not becoming scarious (rarely so); ventral 12-18 mm long, (2-)5-veined from base, ovate to elliptic, narrowing gradually to an apex with 2 broadly triangular mucronate teeth 0.5-1.5 mm long; lateral 8-12 mm long, ovate. Corolla white with brown veins, 20-29 mm long of which the tube 4-6 mm; limb spathulate, 10-17 mm wide, central lobe wider than long, retuse to emarginate, slightly narrowed at base; filaments 7-9 mm long, glabrous to sparsely glandular (densest downwards) and all or two broad hairy at base (rarely all glabrous); appendage 2-4 mm long, oblong, rounded, shorter than or same length as anther; anthers 3-5 mm long. Capsule 4-seeded, ± 15 mm long; seed ± 5.5 x 4 mm.
