Characteristics

Procumbent (rarely erect) perennial herb with several stems from a woody rootstock; stems up to 35 cm long, puberulous to pubescent or densely so with broad glossy hairs. Leaves glabrous to pilose on both sides, densest along midrib, scabrid on both sides; gland-dotted beneath; lamina lanceolate to elliptic, largest 2.5-5.5 x 0.3-1.4 cm; margin entire, not or slightly recurved. Spikes solitary, sessile, dispersed whole when mature. Bracts green to brown, often purplish towards apex, ovate to oblong or elliptic or lower obovate, minutely puberulous to pubescent, puberulous-to pilose-ciliate along veins and on margins; inner pair terminating in a straight or slightly recurved bristle and on each side with 1-6 finely scabrid and glochidiate bristles 0.5-2 mm long; outer pair 3-7 mm long, second pair 6-10 mm long, third pair 8-14 mm long, inner pair 10-15 x 5-7 mm. Bracteoles similar in indumentum and colour, longer than sepals, ovate to oblong or elliptic, 14-19 mm long of which the terminal straight glabrous to scabrid and glochidiate bristle 0.5-2 mm long. Sepals about same length as bracts, uniformly purplish towards apex, puberulous to densely so or pilose along veins; dorsal 3-veined, 15-20 mm long, ovate-oblong, narrowing gradually to the acute apex (rarely only slightly or with 3-toothed apex); ventral2-veined, 14-19 mm long, similar, with 2 triangular acute teeth 1-2 mm long; lateral 1-veiried, 12-15 mm long, lanceolate to ovate. Corolla often included in bracts, white to pale mauve or pale blue, 14-21 mm long of which the tube 5-7 mm; limb oblong-obovate to spathulate, 5-9 mm wide, widest apically, central lobe shorter or longer than lateral, rounded, densely hairy all over upper surface or sparser on lobes, sparser below, finely glandular along edge of tube; callus not ribbed. Filaments 2-3(-6) mm long, glabrous; appendage ± 0.5 mm long, broadly rounded; anthers 1.5-2.5 mm long. Capsule 7-8 mm long; seed not seen.
