Characteristics

Erect (rarely decumbent) annual herb; stems up to 50 cm long, finely sericeous (hairs downwardly directed) or with spreading hairs intermixed (rarely subglabrous). Leaves subequal, beneath glabrous or with a few (rarely many) hairs on midrib, above glabrous or (in Namibia) sometimes with scattered (rarely dense) long hairs on lamina, scabrid on margins; lamina lanceolate to narrowly ovate or narrowly elliptic, largest (3-)4-9.5(-13) x 0.3-1.2 cm; margin entire (rarely toothed in Angola). Heads globose (rarely elongated) when dry, elongated when wet, usually along most of the length of the stem, subsessile; axes glabrous or finely sericeous; floral leaves linear-lanceolate, up to 5(-8) x 0.2-0.4(-0.6) cm, upper 2/3 recurved, finely sericeous (rarely glabrous); margin with thin flexible recurved bristles up to 4 mm long; inner bracts linear-lanceolate to narrowly obovate, up to 2.5 cm long. Sepals sericeous (rarely sparsely so or only on veins), hairs usually longest towards apex; dorsal 12-19 mm long (mucro 1-6 mm), elliptic-obovate, narrowing gradually to an acute tip, no lateral teeth; ventral 10-16 mm long, ovate-elliptic, with 2 cuspidate teeth 1-4 mm long, no lateral teeth; lateral 9-14 mm long. Corolla white to light blue or pale lilac, 10-16 mm long of which the tube 3-6 mm; limb obovate-spathulate, 3-5 mm wide, distinctly 3-lobed, central lobe longer, subacute; callus not ribbed. Filaments 1-3 mm long, included in tube or exserted, glabrous or with a few glands on the inside; appendage 0.5-1 mm long, broadly rounded, strongly curved; anthers 1-2 mm long. Capsule 7-9 mm long; seed ± 5 x 4 mm.
