Characteristics

Perennial herb with trailing much-branched stems from woody rootstock; stems to 35(-45) cm long, sparsely to densely puberulous. Leaves uniformly puberulous or sparsely so beneath, minutely scabrid-puberulous above, one in the whorl much larger than the other three; lamina ovate to elliptic, largest 2-5.2 (-9) x 1.2-2.5(-3) cm; entire or with 1-5 minute teeth on each side. Spikes 2-5 cm long, 4-14-flowered; peduncle 1-7(-12) mm long with 2-3 pairs of sterile bracts; fertile bracts not or slightly glossy, green, no part whitish, uniformly puberulous or sericeous-puberulous (rarely minutely puberulous), lower and middle elliptic-obovate or broadly so, 23-35 (-40) x 12-20 (-23) mm of which the recurved narrowly triangular spinose tip 6-13(-17) mm, on each side with 4-6 teeth of which the longest 5-9 mm. Bracteoles 16-23 x 1-3 mm, linear-lanceolate, acute or apiculate, base not or slightly widened, puberulous or minutely so. Sepals sericeous-puberulous or densely so all over; dorsal 19-23 mm long, 3-5-veined from base, veins branching near apex, ovate-elliptic with spathulate apical part, apex subacute to truncate, wavy, irregularly toothed, scarious; ventral 15-21 mm long, 2-5-veined from base, ovate-elliptic, narrowing gradually to an apex with two triangular and mucronate teeth 2-4 mm long (rarely also with a single central tooth); lateral 8-11 mm long, ovate. Corolla white or cream (very rarely blue to mauve), 22-28 mm long of which the tube 4-7 mm; limb obovate-spathulate, 10-17 mm wide, beneath uniformly hairy except along edges, central lobe wider than long or same length, retuse, not or slightly narrowed at base; filaments 7-9 mm long, sparsely glandular, hairy at base; appendage 0.5-1.5 mm long, rounded; anthers 3.5-5.5 mm long. Capsule and seed not seen.
