Characteristics

Procumbent perennial herb; stems up to 35 cm long, sparsely to densely scabrid-pubescent with broad shiny hairs, longest over 1 mm long, sometimes also with a band of puberulous hairs. Leaves beneath glabrous or with pilose hairs along midrib or sparsely pilose all over, above uniformly sparsely pilose, edges scabrid, gland-dotted beneath; lamina ovate-elliptic or narrowly so, largest 1.7-4.2 x 0.5-1.2 cm; margin entire, not or slightly recurved. Spikes solitary, dispersed whole when mature. Bracts greenish to brownish, inner pairs with purple transverse veins, oblong-elliptic or broadly so to obovate-spathulate or outer subcircular, apical part recurved, with long woolly hairs on midrib, along upper edge and on bristles, otherwise glabrous (rarely sparsely and minutely puberulous on lamina), inner pair terminating in a recurved bristle and on each side with 4-7 glabrous to scabrid and glochidiate bristles 1-3 mm long; outer pair 2-4 mm long, second pair 4-7 mm long, third pair 6-10 mm long, inner pair 9-12 mm long, retuse. Bracteoles longer than sepals, elliptic-obovate, 10-15 mm long of which the straight to recurved glochidiate bristle (woolly at base) 2-5 mm long, with transverse purple bands. Sepals shorter than or same length as bracts, often purplish towards tip, puberulous-or woolly-ciliate near tip, otherwise glabrous or sparsely and minutely puberulous; dorsal 3-veined, 9-12 mm long, ovate-oblong, with ligulate-spathulate apical part, apex almost truncate, with 3 obtuse teeth or with single acute tip; ventral 2-veined, 8-12 mm long, similar, with 2 triangular teeth under 0.5 mm long; lateral 1-veined, 7-10 mm long, lanceolate-ovate. Corolla ± included in bracts, light blue to blue or purple, 9-11 mm long of which the tube 3-4 mm; limb obovate-spathulate, 4-5 mm wide, widest apically, lobes of similar length, central narrowest, hairy in central part on both sides, tube sometimes finely glandular along upper edge; callus not ribbed. Filaments 1-2 mm long, glabrous; appendage under 0.5 mm long, broadly rounded; anthers 1-1.5 mm long. Capsule 6-8 mm long; seed ± 5 x 3.5 mm.
