Characteristics

Dwarf shrub or shrubby herb forming dome-shaped cushions up to 30 cm tall and 50 cm in diameter; young branches whitish sericeous-puberulous or densely so. Leaves subequal or smaller down to % of larger, sparsely crisped sericeous-puberulous; lamina ovate-elliptic or narrowly so, largest 2-3.2 x 0.4-0.9 cm; margin on some with 1-3 teeth per side, venation very indistinct. Spikes solitary, persistent, supported by 2 pairs of hard decussate spines (one reduced leaf-whorl) without lamina; bracts in 4 pairs, minutely sericeous-puberulous throughout or only in apical part, 3 outer pairs ovate-elliptic, inner pair lanceolate and bracteole-like (but opposite dorsal and ventral sepal), all with a sharp pungent mucro 1-5 mm long and without or with 1-2 spine-like bristles per side; outer pair 5-11 mm long, second pair 9-18 mm long, third pair 11-22 mm long (always with bristles), inner pair 13-21 mm long. Bracteoles absent. Sepals uniformly minutely sericeous-puberulous or only in apical part; dorsal 18-25 mm long (mucro 1-2 mm), elliptic-obovate, narrowing graduallyto the acute to acuminate apex; ventral 17-22 mm long, elliptic, with two acuminate teeth 1-3 mm long; lateral 12-18 mm long. Corolla clear light blue, 23-30 mm long of which the tube 6-8 mm; limb obovate, 8-10 mm wide, distinctly 3-lobed (middle lobe much longer), with triangular lobes on outside of lateral lobes; callus not ribbed. Filaments 6-9 mm long, sparsely glandular; appendage ± 0.5 mm long, broadly rounded; filaments 4-5 mm long. Capsule and seed not seen.
