Characteristics

Prostrate herbs. Leaves opposite, succulent, very gradually narrowing into a clasping petiole at base, entire, glabrous. Inflorescences of axillary or terminal, sessile or pedunculate heads, or elongated spike-like heads; bracts and bracteoles overlapping, scarious. Flowers bisexual, compressed; tepals 5, thickened and 3-veined from base, outer 3 flat and broad, inner 2 narrower and incurved; stamens 5, filaments free, expanded slightly below, anthers linear, 2-locular, pseudostaminodia absent; ovule 1, long-stalked, style short, stigmas 2, linear. Utricle compressed, ovoid; seed minute.
