Characteristics

Plants 0.8-1.5 m high, sometimes forming large clumps. Rhizome compact and corm-like, 10-20 mm diam. Stem formed by basal internode only, terete, 1.5-4.0 mm diam., with fine stomatiferous furrows. Foliage leaves 2 to 6 in a basal tuft, shorter than stem, terete, resembling stem but slightly thinner. Rhipidia 16 to 60 grouped in fascicles of 2 to 6 in a crowded, ± globose head, subtended by spreading, rigid, fibrous bract, usually grey and ± inconspicuous but sometimes with prominent green foliar tip, not much sheathing; pedicels pubescent distally; rhipidial bracts and outer spathe greyish brown, 10-16 mm long, ovate, inner spathe 18-24 mm long, straw-coloured. Flowers yellow; tepals free, elliptic, outer 16-23 x 8-11 mm, inner ± 1/2 as wide. Filaments 3.5-4.5 mm long; anthers ± 5 mm long. Ovary shortly exserted, smooth or rugulose; style ± 2.5 mm long, branches 4.5-6.0 mm long.
