Characteristics

Plants 250-800 mm high, sometimes forming large clumps. Rhizome compact and corm-like, 5-15 mm diam. Stem formed by basal internode only, terete, 1.2-3.0 mm diam., with fine stomatiferous furrows. Foliage leaves 2 to 6 in a basal tuft, terete, much longer than flowering stem, flexible and trailing, resembling stem but slightly thinner. Rhipidia 6 to 40 in a dense, ± globose head subtended by horizontally spreading, rigid, terete, leaf-like bract, 30-80(-200) mm long, expanded at base and partially sheathing, succeeding bract similar but smaller; pedicels villous distally; rhipidial bracts and spathes firm textured, grey-green, outer 8-18 mm long, ovate, inner 18-30 mm long. Flowers yellow; tepals free, elliptic, outer 19-28 x 6-14 mm, inner slightly smaller. Filaments 4-6 mm long; anthers ± 6 mm long. Ovary exserted, smooth; style 1.5-3.0 mm long, branches 5-8 mm long. Capsules exserted, broadly ovoid, trilobed, smooth, 5-11 mm long, grey to blackish.
