Plants 300-700 mm high. Rhizome short, erect, 5-15 mm diam. Stem 2 or 3 internodes long, terete or subterete, elliptic in section toward base, smooth, 2.5-4.0 mm diam. near base, laxly branched in upper 1/2, viscid for some distance below nodes. Foliage leaves 6 to 11 in a basal fan, 1/3 to 1/2 as long as stem, linear, 4-11 mm wide, striate, uppermost leaf with plane blade, 30-100 mm long, well separated from first branch. Rhipidia solitary on slender branches; pedicels puberulous; spathes sometimes flushed purple, with translucent or brown-speckled membranous margins and apices; outer ± 1/3 to 1/4 as long as inner, 5-7 mm long, inner 15-22 mm long. Flowers deep blue (blue-mauve); tepals free, elliptic, outer 14-18 x 6-8 mm, inner slightly smaller. Filaments 4-6 mm long, pale blue-mauve; anthers ± 5 mm long, yellow. Ovary exserted, smooth; style 1-2 mm long, branches 5-7 mm long. Capsules obovoid to subglobose, smooth, 4-7 mm long.
