Plants 0.5-1.8 m high, sometimes forming large tussocks. Rhizome compact and corm-like, 10-20 mm diam. Stem formed by basal internode only, terete, 1.5-4.0 mm diam., with fine stomatiferous furrows. Foliage leaves 2 to 8 in a basal tuft, ± as long as flowering stem, resembling stem but slightly thinner. Rhipidia 2 to 20, straight or curved, in a triangular or hemispherical head, subtended by erect, green, terete bract, sometimes extended in a long pungent tip; pedicels densely puberulous distally; outer rhipidial spathe and associated bracts firm textured, usually greenish or purplish, 8-20 mm long, ovate, often with dry papery tips, inner spathe 20-40 mm long, dull green. Flowers yellow, usually with reddish spots and reddish midline on reverse; tepals free, elliptic or oblong, outer 16-39 x 6-20 mm, inner slightly smaller. Filaments 2.5-4.0 mm long; anthers 6-9 mm long. Ovary scarcely or shortly exserted, smooth; style 2-3 mm long, branches 4.5-6.6 mm long. Capsules exserted, ovoid to narrowly ovoid, truncate or with shortly conical apex, smooth, 10-19 mm long, greyish to brown.
