Characteristics

Plants up to ± 1 m high, sometimes forming tussocks. Rhizome compact and corm-like, 10-20 mm diam. Stem formed by basal internode only, terete, ± 3 mm diam., with fine stomatiferous furrows. Foliage leaves 2 to 6 in a basal tuft, terete, ± as long as flowering stem, resembling stem but slightly thinner. Rhipidia 2 to 6, sessile, crowded in a triangular head on a short peduncle subtended by erect, green, terete bract, sometimes extended in a long pungent tip appearing as a continuation of stem; pedicels densely puberulous distally; bracts and outer rhipidial spathe firm textured, usually greenish or purplish, spathe 12-25 mm long, ovate, often with dry papery tips, inner spathe 30-45 mm long, dull green. Flowers yellow; tepals free, elliptic or oblong, outer 18-24 x 6-10 mm, inner slightly smaller. Filaments 3.0-4.5 mm long; anthers ± 6 mm long. Ovary shortly exserted, smooth; style ± 2.5 mm long, branches ± 5 mm long. Capsules exserted, obovoid to barrel-shaped, truncate, smooth, 10-16 mm long, dull green to brown.
