Characteristics

Plants 400-1300 mm high, sometimes forming large tussocks. Rhizome compact and corm-like, ± 10 mm diam. Stem formed by basal internode only, terete, 1.2-2.5 mm diam., with fine stomatiferous furrows. Foliage leaves 2 to 8 in a basal tuft, ± as long as flowering stem, flexible, resembling stem but slightly thinner. Rhipidia 10-80(-120) sessile in a dense, ± globose head subtended by suberect or erect (rarely spreading) bract, usually green but rarely grey and fibrous, sometimes extended in a long flexible tip, not partially sheathing; pedicels slightly or more densely puberulous distally; rhipidial bracts and outer spathe firm textured, usually greenish but sometimes brown, usually short and obtuse or sometimes acute, 5-9 mm long, ovate, inner spathe narrow and often curved, 10-18 mm long, dull green. Flowers yellow; tepals free, elliptic or oblong, outer 11-22 x 3.5-9.0 mm, inner slightly smaller or only half as wide. Filaments 2.5-4.5 mm long; anthers 3.5-6.0 mm long. Ovary exserted, smooth or minutely tubercled; style 1.2-2.5 mm long, branches 3.5-6.0 mm long. Capsules exserted, subglobose, trilobed with rounded valves, smooth or minutely tubercled, 4-6 mm long, grey-green to brown.
