Characteristics

Plants slender, 150-500 mm high, usually forming small tufts. Rhizome compact and corm-like, 5-10 mm diam. Stem formed by basal internode only, terete, 1-2 mm diam., with fine stomatiferous furrows. Foliage leaves 2 to 6 in a basal tuft, shorter to as long as stem, terete, resembling stem but slightly thinner. Rhipidia suberect, 2 to 7 crowded in a ± cylindric head subtended by broad, fibrous, dark reddish or chestnut-brown bract, usually without foliar tip, almost completely sheathing young synflorescence, next inflorescence bract similar in texture and size; pedicels subglabrous; rhipidial bracts and spathes firm-textured, bracts and outer spathe lanceolate, 6-10 mm long, brown, inner spathe ± 22 mm long, greenish. Flowers yellow; tepals free, elliptic, outer 14-18 x 5-8 mm, inner slightly smaller. Filaments 2-3 mm long; anthers ± 4 mm long. Ovary exserted, smooth; style 2-3 mm long, branches 3-4 mm long. Capsules exserted, obovoid, smooth, 8-10 mm long.
