Shrubs 1-2 m tall, dioecious or monoecious; branches often densely strigose. Dioecious or monoecious. Leaves opposite, subequal in size; stipules lanceolate, 5-8 mm, free or sometimes connate at base; petiole 0.5-2.5 cm, often strigillose; leaf blade ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 5-19(-24) × 2-4(-6.4) cm, thinly papery, secondary veins 2 or 3 each side of midvein, abaxial surface pubescent along veins, adaxial surface sometimes slightly rugose, densely appressed strigillose, base ob-tuse or broadly cuneate, margin flattened serrulate, apex acuminate. Glomerules on specialized axillary spikelike shoots; male shoots often paired, in proximal axils in monoecious plants, 3-10 cm; female spikes solitary, nodding, 4-18 cm. Male flowers 4-merous, sessile; perianth lobes elliptic, ca. 1.3 mm, sparsely puberulent, connate at base. Fruiting perianth fusiform or oblanceolate, compressed, 1-1.5 mm, sparsely strigillose on shoulder, base with stipe ca. 0.8 mm, apex with very short neck, attenuate, 2-toothed, stigma 0.7-1 mm. Fl.
