Characteristics

Glabrous shrub to 3 m high, dioecious. Stipules triangular, 1.7–4.5 mm long, acute, glabrous, yellow-brown with a white margin. Branch leaves triangular, c. 3 mm long. Branchlets to 40 cm long, rounded. Branchlet leaves: petiole 2–5.5 mm long, winged; lamina ovate, 55–115 mm long, 28–45 mm wide, sometimes cordate, acuminate or acute, mucronate, discolorous. Inflorescences sometimes androgynous. Sepals spreading, red-purple. Male flowers solitary; pedicels 7.5–15 mm long; sepals connate at base, each with a basal scale, forming a 6-lobed disc 2.5–4.5 mm diam.; lobes triangular, 0.5–1.2 mm long; stamens erect, not apiculate; filaments shortly connate at base, anthers horizontal. Female flowers 1–3 per fascicle; pedicels 7–15 mm long, elongating in fruit to 45 mm; sepals elliptic, orbicular or ovate, 1.5–3.5 mm long, 1.5–3.2 mm wide, obtuse or acute; ovary subglobose, 1.5–3 mm diam., smooth; stigmatic branches coiled. Fruit a subglobose capsule, 10–15 mm diam., slightly grooved, smooth, pink–red. Seeds hemispherical, 7–9 mm long, smooth, yellow-brown.
