A loosely branched shrub 2–5 m. with spreading or sometimes drooping branches.. Bark smooth or almost so, or fissured, grey or greyish brown.. Twigs dark grey or brown, sparingly lenticellate.. Young shoots and petioles densely fulvous or ferruginous tomentose.. Petioles 2–5 mm. long; leaf-blades obovate to elliptic-obovate, (1–)2–8(–9) cm. long, (0.5–)1–4(–5.5) cm. wide, subacute, obtuse, rounded or truncate, sometimes mucronulate or mucronate, cuneate, rounded or truncate at base, usually entire but sometimes shallowly crenate, chartaceous, lateral nerves (5–)6–9(–11) pairs, craspedodromous, flat or somewhat impressed above, prominent beneath, tertiary nerves subparallel, slightly or fairly prominent beneath, sparingly pubescent above, but evenly pubescent along the midrib, tardily subglabrescent, and evenly pubescent beneath, more densely so along the midrib and lateral nerves, dull green above, paler or sometimes somewhat ferrugineous beneath.. Stipules linear-lanceolate, long filiform-acuminate, 4–6(–8) mm. long, evenly to densely pubescent, arcuate, persistent.. Flowers solitary or in small few-flowered axillary clusters.. Bracts minute, pubescent.. Male flowers: pedicels 1 mm. long, pubescent; sepals triangular, 2 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, acute, evenly to densely pubescent without, glabrous within, green and reddish-tinged or crimson; petals obtriangular-spathulate, 1 mm. long, irregularly denticulate at the apex, pale greenish cream; disc annular, ± flat, 2 mm. across, entire, glabrous; staminal column 1 mm. high; filaments greenish cream; anthers 0.75 mm. long, yellow; pistillode conical, 1 mm. tall, bifid at the apex.. Female flowers very shortly pedicellate or subsessile; sepals narrowly triangular-lanceolate, thick, 2 mm. long, 0.5 mm. wide, acutely acuminate, densely pubescent without, evenly adpressed pubescent within; petals elliptic, 0.5–0.75 mm. long, subentire, pubescent without, glabrous within; outer disc ± annular, 1.5 mm. across, inner disc divided into 2–3 triangular glabrous ± entire lobes enclosing the ovary; ovary ovoid-subglobose, 1.5–2 mm. long, 2-locular; styles 2, ± free, bifid.. Fruits subglobose, 1-locular by abortion or occasionally 2-locular, 6–7 mm. long and wide, green at first, then becoming dull deep red, brown or blackish.. Seed 4 mm. long, ± smooth, brown.
More
Similar to B. ferruginea, differing chiefly in having narrower (0.5–1 mm wide), arcuate, more persistent stipules, shorter (3–5 mm long) petioles, generally smaller leaves with a more laxly reticulate venation, fewer (3–5-)flowered glomerules, longer (2–3 mm long) male sepals, female sepals pubescent within towards the apex and ± glabrous inner female disk.
A shrub or small tree. It grows up to 6 m tall. The stems are 4-7 cm across. It is similar to Bridelia ferruginea but with more narrow stipules, smaller leaves and fewer flowers in a group.
