Genus

Angiosperms > Malpighiales > Achariaceae

Characteristics

Subshrubs, shrubs or small trees. Leaves persistent, alternate, serrate or dentate, penninerved, petiolate; stipules ± caducous. Flowers in axillary peduncled cymose panicles, racemes or fascicles, the ♂ often subumbellately arranged, bisexual, or unisexual, apparently rarely dioecious, each flower with a rather large subpersistent basal bract. Sepals 3, valvate, finally free to the base, with setose soft processes on the back. Petals 6–12, imbricate, larger than the sepals. Stamens numerous, in 2 series, the outer somewhat longer than the inner one; filaments slender, rather short; anthers linear, dehiscing by slits. Ovary 1-locular, with 3–5 parietal multi-ovulate placentas; style simple; stigma subentire. Capsule globose, tardily dehiscent longitudinally into 3–5 valves, covered in numerous elongate branched soft bristles. Seeds rather numerous, ovoid or compressed; testa crustaceous, arillate at base.
