Widespread and common, particularly in coastal lowlands, but also extending to high elevations in ranges and tablelands. In some areas it extends to the western slopes of the Dividing Range. It forms strands and large masses on trees, boulders and cliff faces in mangroves, coastal forests, rainforests and humid areas of open forest in shady or exposed, sunny situations.
