Plants forming dense clumps. Rootstock c. 2 mm thick. Pseudobulbs tapered, 15–40 × 8–12 mm, grooved, dark green to yellowish green. Leaves with petiole 10–20 mm long; lamina 80–150 × 15–25 mm, thin-textured but stiff, dark green to yellowish green. Inflorescences thin, 100–200 mm long. Flowers 60–90 × 20–25 mm, reddish to reddish purple with yellow or white margins and white tips on sepals, petals purplish. Dorsal sepal 20–35 × 3–4 mm, margins densely hairy, apex thread-like. Lateral sepals fused at base, each sepal 35–80 × 5–7 mm, broad in basal half, tips with thread-like tails 20–30 mm long which often tangle. Petals forming hood over column and labellum base, 4–7 × 2 mm. Labellum 5–7 × 1.5–2 mm, narrowly tapered, purple and yellow, tip with slender trunk-like appendage.
Locally common; growing low down on trunks and larger branches of fibrous-barked trees and palms on rainforest margins, vine forest and monsoonal thickets. Abundant on trees and rocks in moist to wet rainforest that occurs on the taller hills of Moa Island in the Torres Strait.
