Perennial herb, up to 0.49 m high. Leaf blades up to 125 x 0.2-0.4 mm, filiform, ± glabrous. Culm scapose, filiform, terete, ridged, ± 0.4 mm in diam. Inflorescence ± 40(-72) x 35(-70) mm, a compound anthela of ± 37(-90) spikelets, sometimes more compact, reduced to ± 11 spikelets. Subtending bracts 2-4; blades filiform. Spikelets 4.5-15.0 x 1.0-2.0 mm, elliptic-lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate. Glumes: fertile boat-shaped, ovate-elliptic, 2.2-3.6 x 1.3-2.5 mm, keel excurrent into minute awn. Flowering time Jan. Nutlet obovate to obcordate, excluding style base 0.6-1.0 x 0.40.7 mm, 3-angled, cream-coloured becoming dark brown, crowned with persistent, dark, button-like style base, surface transversely wavy.
