Perennial herb, up to 300 mm high; usually tufted, or sometimes with uniseriate rhizome and bases not swollen; sheath mouth distinctly bearded with long hairs. Leaves with blade filiform, well developed. Flowers: inflorescence variable; anther crests rounded; glumes dark chestnut-brown, seldom chestnut-red, with 3 veins terminating slightly below apex, 3.6-5.8 mm long; style base pyramidal, only temporarily persistent on nutlet; Oct.-Feb. Fruit a nutlet, 1.0-2.0 x 0.8-1.3 mm.
