Nearly glabrous, except the flower-glumes; stem 20 in. long, slender, 1-headed, glabrous at the top, almost leafless, the glabrous, pale-brown, weak leaf-sheaths produced on one side about 1 in., not green; head 1 in. in diam., dense, pale-brown, the numerous spikelets spreading on all sides, concealing the small bracts; spikelets nearly 1/2 by 1/8 in., many-flowered; glumes ovate, subacute, minutely pubescent; keel hardly excurrent; stamens 3; anthers large, linear-oblong, not crested; nut minute, hardly 1/4 the length of the glume, obovoid, round-trigonous, white, ultimately yellow-brown, smooth, not, or most obscurely, lineolate; style linear, smooth, twice as long as the nut, deciduous, leaving the brown style-base on the nut, branches 3 linear, shorter than the style.
