Tufted perennial, up to 400 mm high; densely tufted, with woody rhizome, with sparse pubescence; shoots clothed with persistent, soft, brown leaf sheaths. Flowers: hemispherical heads of 4-6 large, sessile spikelets; glumes dark blackish brown, with apices clearly rounded to emarginate, midvein terminating below apex, margins minutely white-ciliate. Fruit a nutlet, 1.0-1.8 x 0.50-1.25 mm.
Perennial herb, up to 300 mm tall. Leaves filiform. Old leaf bases of previous year prominent. Heads with 3-5 spikelets. Glumes narrowly oblong, 3.4-6.7 x 1.9-3.5 mm, apex rounded to emarginate, white ciliate, bright chestnut-brown.
