Bursaria incana Lindl.

Species

Angiosperms > Apiales > Pittosporaceae > Bursaria

Characteristics

Narrow-canopied tree 6–10 m high; bark thick, fissured, dark grey platelets; indumentum of dense, appressed hairs on most plant parts ± persistent. Juvenile and intermediate stages: leaves clustering, narrowly elliptic, 17–20 mm long, 4–5 mm wide; margins almost entire; petioles 1–2 mm. Adult stages quickly achieved: leaves sessile, obcordate, 60–90 mm long, 6–16 mm wide; margins thickened, generally flat or recurving. Inflorescences leafy, bracteose panicles of mainly bisexual, regular, white flowers, becoming yellower with age; pedicels short, less than 2 mm with basal vestigial involucre. Sepals 1–2 mm long, spreading from the base; petal length 6–7.5 mm, also spreading from the base. Ovary often with uniseriate and T-shaped hairs (1–3 basal cells with an elongated cross cell), density and persistence variable. Fruits are brown capsules when mature,  plump/not overly flattened, 8–10 mm long, 7–9 mm diam., persisting. Seeds about 2–6 seeds per loculus; brown with thick margins but not winged, flat, 7 mm long, 3 mm wide.
