Characteristics

Shrub or small tree with unifoliolate, long-petioled leaves. Inflorescence racemose, few-flowered, axillary. Flowers with dimorphic androecium and gynoecium. Sepals 5, imbricate in bud, very shortly connate at base, persisting in fruit. Petals 5, free, subequal, larger than sepals. Stamens 10, five episepalous longer than five epipetalous; filaments connate for short distance at base. Carpel solitary; ovary densely hairy; style simple with broadened papillose stigma. Ovules 1–3, usually 2, inserted towards apex of ventral suture. Fruit a sub cylindrical follicle, densely pubescent. Dehiscence by ventral suture. Seed narrowly ovoid; aril lobate, spreading laterally from sides of hilum; embryo straight; cotyledons flattened, embedded in copious endosperm.
