Leaf turgid at flowering time, 15–30 × 7–11 mm, ovate, upper surface dark green to dark reddish green with darker veins, dark red beneath. Flower stem 50–150 mm, 1-or 2-flowered. Flowers 15–25 × 7–10 mm, yellowish green with reddish suffusions, labellum red with black calli. Dorsal sepal 6–10 × 1–1.5 mm. Lateral sepals 6–10 × 1–1.5 mm, kinked towards apex. Petals 6–10 × 0.5 mm. Labellum obliquely erect when set (often set at steep angle); labellum strap 4–7 × 2.5–3.5 mm; labellum lamina strongly humped in side view, broadly flask-shaped from above, 10–14 × 3–4 mm, widest above base then tapered, apical half drawn out into long neck, densely covered with shiny black calli; basal lobe blunt, projected back in same plane as labellum. Column 7–9 mm long.
Widespread and common; growing in a wide range of habitats including open forest, woodland, shrubland, heath and coastal scrub in freely draining, sandy or gravelly soil, often near winter-wet flats and swamps; occurs rarely among moss or in shallow soil on granite outcrops.
