Characteristics

Undershrub without stilt roots; rhizome short, clonal. Stems to 50 cm long, with many short lateral branches. Leaves: lamina 5.2–16.5 mm long, 0.8–1.2 mm wide, glabrous, margin finely scabrous, apex acute with a pungent mucro 0.3–0.4 mm long; sheath with branched trichomes on margin, otherwise glabrous. Bracts papery with a pale brown apex, outer bracts brown to reddish brown, c. 11 × c. 2 mm, apex sometimes with vestigial leaf lamina c. 2 × 0.4 mm, margin pilose or with branched trichomes. Perianth: tube 10.5–12.3 mm long, pilose in lower third; throat with tangle of short barbed hairs; lobes thinly coriaceous, 11.9–21.5 mm long, 2.8–3.9 mm wide, blue, becoming red, pilose on abaxial side, apex acute. Staminal filaments 3.5–4.1 mm long. Anthers 4.5–5.6 × 1.1–1.3 mm, yellow, not turning orange-red with age, pores terminal. Style c. 11 mm long, exceeding anthers. Seeds not seen.
