Characteristics

Semi-succulent or semi-woody herb up to 1 m. high, erect or semi-procumbent, sometimes epiphytic; branches scurfy and inconspicuously glandular-pubescent, glabrescent.. Leaf-lamina elliptic, ovate or ovate-oblong, 2–7 cm. long, 1.5–4.5 cm. wide, apex acute, base cuneate to shortly attenuate, rarely rounded, margins slightly sinuate, serrate or dentate, ciliate; sparsely and inconspicuously glandular-puberulous on both surfaces, soon glabrous; midrib and 2 pairs of basal longitudinal nerves scarcely visible above, subprominent beneath, scurfy; petiole 1–5 cm. long.. Inflorescence cymose; axis up to 11 cm. long; flowers 1–12, secund, on short stout pedicels ± 0.5 mm. long.. Calyx turbinate, 3 mm. long, 4 mm. in diameter, 10-ribbed; lobes small, triangular-acuminate.. Petals obliquely obovate, up to 10–15 mm. long, 8 mm. wide, pinkish-mauve.. Stamens subequal; anthers 1.5–2 mm. long; anther connective produced ± 0.3–0.6 mm., anterior scale-lobe 0.5–1 mm. long, filaments 4 mm. long.. Calyx accrescent in fruit to 4.5 mm. long, 5.5 mm. in diameter, woody, capsule with the crown of scales exserted beyond the calyx for ± 2.5 mm.. Fig. 15.
