Characteristics

A tree. It grows 4-10 m high. The crown is long and dense. The trunk is grooved and is 20-30 cm wide. The bark is smooth and reddish-brown. The leaves have hairy leaf stalks. The leaf blade is oval and 3-10 cm long by 2-6 cm wide. The flowers are in the axils of leaves. The fruit are purple, round berries. They are fleshy with a sweet edible pulp.

Cultivation

Plants are grown from seeds. The seeds are collected by shaking fruit bunches onto canvas and allowing them to partly decompose in a plastic bag before washing out the seeds in running water. The seeds should be sown fresh and are best in part shade. Seedlings emerge in 15-25 days.
