Characteristics

A tree. It grows 4-16 m high. The crown is elongated and the young branches are reddish. The trunk is grooved and 15-25 cm across. The bark is smooth with brown spots and flakes off in thin pieces. The leaves are narrowly oval and 5-22 cm long by 2-9 cm wide. The flowers can occur singly or in groups or 2-3 in the axils of leaves. The fruit is a berry. It is 2.5 cm across. It is yellow and contains 10-20 small seeds.

Cultivation

Plants are grown from seeds. The seeds are collected from ripe fruit and put into a plastic bag to partly decompose then washed in running water. The seeds need to be planted fresh and are best in light shade. Seedlings emerge in 20-40 days.
