Perennial herb with short rhizomes. Roots fibrous. Flowering stem single, unbranched. Leaves 1 or 2 radical, others cauline. Inflorescence a single flower or few-flowered with oldest flower terminal. Flowers bisexual, pedicellate, bracteate. Perianth regular; segments 6, free, spreading. Stamens 6; filaments free; anthers linear, basifixed, dehiscing by slits, extrorse. Ovary inferior, unilocular; ovules numerous per locule; placentation parietal; styles 3, free. Fruit a capsule, oblong or turbinate, prominently and obtusely 3-angled, probably dehiscing by terminal pores. Seeds numerous, flattened or angular, pale red-brown.
