Characteristics

Plants form large clumps, up to 0.6 m high; rhizomatous, forming long lines of culms, culms not solid, or cavity small. Culms unbranched. Leaf sheaths persistent, wrapped around culm. Male inflorescences simple, with 11-100 small spikelets per culm; spathes overtopping the spikelets, soon deciduous; bracts 2.0-3.5 mm long, awn minute or absent. Female spikelets 2-5 per culm; bracts bony and tightly curved into spindleshaped spikelets.
